Michael Shannon gives a chilling performance in THE ICEMAN. As Richard he delves deeper into the mob life, the wall that separates his violent nature and his family life begins to crumble. They are clueless to the violent sadistic nature of his real job. Richard’s family thinks he works on Wall Street. Years pass by and Richards grisly murders provide money so he can take care of his wife and two daughters. Simultaneously, he begins work as a hitman for mob boss Roy Demeo. The movie takes place as he starts his life with his wife Deborah. Richard was nicknamed “The Iceman” because of his cold-blooded appetite for murder. Did I feel sorry for Kuklinsky at the end? Yes.well actually it was pity that I felt.THE ICEMAN is about the notorious Mafia hitman Richard Kuklinski who was arrested in 1986.
And while some of that may have happened, it was a good movie about a bad man. That is a good thing to hear because this kind of story like lends itself to Hollywood sensationalism. While leaving the movie I ran into a gentleman who had watched the actual documentary of Kuklinsky's life and he said the movie was a good portrayal of the facts. She was believable and really had the suffering wife thing down. I'm not a fan of Winona Ryder but I liked her portrayal of the Mrs. And those subtle expressions of his! They're great. From cold-hearted killer to nice person to ragging man to loving husband and father. I don't know of many actors who could go from one to the other so effortlessly. The multiplicity of his lifestyle had to be a killer (no pun intended) to live out. Anyway, I had never heard of this Kuklinsky person and it was interesting to see his story. This guy can act and you lose the person and totally see the characters he portrays.
Michael Shannon should get at least an Academy Award for his performance in this movie.
